What goes on inside Suffolk's amazing historical archives?
The Hold in Ipswich, the County’s official archive, is home to over 900 years’ worth of Suffolk history and heritage. Their Senior Archivist, Bridget Hanley, says, "One of my favourite pieces is this First World War scrapbook from a school in Aldeburgh. It’s so patriotic, and features a mix of things throughout, including stamps and a soldier’s prayer."
It's difficult to believe how intact and well-preserved this century-old scrapbook remains. The colours are incredibly vivid, and the glue still sticks everything to the pages. "Preservation of the collections is key to the role", explains Bridget.

Bridget was also one of the guest speakers at SLHC's Recorders' Conference at Elmswell on 20th April this year, at which she gave a well-informed presentation of "Practical Tips on the Storage and Cataloguing of Archives". She kindly offered a copy of her Powerpoint for our access, and Members will shortly be able to view it on the Help Centre computers.
