For our first talk of meteorological Spring, on 18th March we were delighted to welcome ‘virtual’ guest Jackie Depelle from her home in West Yorkshire. A well-known family history tutor and speaker, the subject of Jackie’s talk was close to the hearts of many in the audience who have struggled to decipher old documents and, as a result, have missed out on the often valuable genealogical information they contain.

Reading the Original
Jackie Depelle imparts to us hints and tips for deciphering old documents.
How difficult can it be to read a few lines on a census page, or the details on a certificate? The answer is — very! Then, of course, there are Parish Registers — most recently in English, before we head back into Latin entries — not forgetting Probate records, Parish Chest documents and Manorial documents, that often present such a challenge. Let’s take a look at the techniques we can employ, as well as the extensive help and guidance, both in print and on online. Turning squiggles into words can be fun – honestly!
