Denise Bates, who spoke to us over Zoom from Manchester, became interested in the use of non-standard names after discovering several examples whilst researching her own family tree. They aren't unusual but, after 1837, civil registration made it easier to study what was happening, and how choices of names were changing.

POSTED ON 1st DECEMBER BY CHRIS BROOM
Given the current uncertainty about the threat posed by the new COVID-19 ‘Omicron’ variant, we have made the decision to abandon our plans for our December talk to be delivered both online and, simultaneously, on Zoom. The talk will now be hosted solely via Zoom.
We recognise that this may be disappointing for some of our members; however, we suspect that recent developments will have dampened appetite for physical meetings, and we are keen to play our part in helping everyone stay healthy in the run-up to Christmas.
The good news is that you can still book your place for Denise Bates' talk on ‘Forenames and what they reveal about our ancestors' at 2:30pm on Monday, 13th December in the normal way, so we hope to ‘see' many of you there.
As far as future events are concerned, we will keep the situation under review and ensure that you are kept informed of our plans.
