Our 2020 Open Day

AVSFHG event
At the Group’s recent Open Day held at the Leiston Long Shop, visitors were impressed by the survey of the graveyard at St Margaret’s Church, displayed in the Board Room, and were again intrigued by Peter Drew’s extensive collection of historical newspaper cuttings and postcards featuring the Sizewell, Thorpeness, Aldringham and Friston areas.  And to assist the Group’s research project to commemorate VE Day, a number of visitors were very helpfully able to supply information about their family members who were killed in the Second World War.

Across the courtyard in the Garrett Room, help was on hand to assist folk to research their family trees, and ever popular Janet Huckle (shown above) was kept busy as usual dating peoples’ old family photographs.

Visitors' donations raised £70.00 for Long Shop funds.

A Special Family History Open Day will be held on Saturday 22nd February at
the Long Shop Museum, Leiston, IP16 4ES, from 10am to 3pm.

A variety of exhibits will be on show, including local graveyard surveys, war memorials, directories,
parish registers, census returns, old maps of the area, and more items of local history interest.

Special features of our Open Day this year will be the results of two recent projects:

In preparation for Leiston's VE75 celebrations in May (which you can read about here),
we are currently researching the lives of those Leiston folk
who tragically lost their lives during World War Two, and
we are appealing to the public for stories, photos or other treasured artefacts relating to them.

Also, we have been cataloguing the gravestones at St Margaret’s, Leiston;
the finalised project will be formally unveiled at the Open Day, when visitors will have the opportunity
to discover more about their ancestral links with Leiston and obtain digital copies of relevant photos.

We will also again be displaying our historic photos of Leiston Grammar School sports teams,
including some new ones which have only recently come to light.

And back by popular demand – Have you got any old family photos which you can’t put a date to?
Bring them along and let our expert Janet Huckle advise you.

Are you trying to trace your family tree? Advice and help will be available from experienced researchers.
And we’ll have our computers with (hopefully) internet to help with your research.

Free entrance, but donations to The Long Shop appreciated.  Light refreshments.
