Crabbe, and Aldeburgh in his time
Others' event
We have been invited by Aldeburgh & District Local History Society to visit them for this first joint event on a WEDNESDAY evening.
Although George Crabbe (1754-1832) is known as Aldeburgh’s poet, little is told of his family background and local influences which led to his struggles for poetic fame. His “realistic narrative poetry”, based on the middle and working classes of his time, eventually captured the admiration of several of his peers, one being Lord Byron. His poems include The Village and The Borough — the latter being the source of Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes. For 13 years, Crabbe had a living as clergyman in Parham, Gt Glemham and Rendham.
Ray Rumsby is the speaker, with a passion for Crabbe’s works. He will regale us with fascinating stories of the poet’s varied life, family and times. Do come and be entertained!
It will be the closing talk in the Local History Society's 2019/20 Winter Programme, the theme of which has been "A Local View of the Late 18th and Early 19th Century".
