Family History Open Day 2017
On Saturday 11th February, we held our annual 'Open Day' at the Long Shop Museum in Leiston. Although the day was cold – temperatures of one degree with accompanying flurries of sleet and snow – the weather did not deter a steady flow of visitors who turned up to view our displays.
There was information about the Group’s ongoing project that aims to record and research the history of all those houses in Leiston that are identified not only by number, but also have a named house plaque.
Di and Henry Mann presented a display which included photographs, documents, memorabilia and written notes about the life of Leiston centenarian William Herbert Ling. The display drew interest from local visitors and family historians alike.
Janet Huckle was on hand to provide assistance for people wishing to date their old family photographs.
Terry Davis and John Peters offered computer expertise for those visitors searching their family history online.
In addition there were displays about the 1st World War, information concerning our family history group and, of course, willing members glad to give advice to those seeking help with their research.
The event was attended by 56 people (members and visitors) and raised a donation of £62.30 plus £31.10 for refreshments — both amounts to the benefit of the Long Shop Museum.
We hope visitors to our 'Open Day' found the displays interesting, the advice and information useful, and that, most importantly, they left with a desire to delve into their own family history.
