Crystal Palace & Gt Exhibition
Others' event
East Suffolk U3A in Saxmundham are presenting "Crystal Palace and the Great Exhibition: an account", by Dr Geoffrey Kay, of the design and building of Crystal Palace, a description of the exhibits, and analysis of the importance of the Exhibition.
(A local connection of interest is that Garretts, who exhibited their steam engines, proudly organised a ship to take all their staff to the Exhibition. Whilst there, Richard Garrett III saw new American manufacturing ideas (an early example of networking!), and on his return introduced "flow-line production" – a very early assembly line - by constructing a new workshop for the purpose in 1852, 'The Long Shop'. He also noted how much easier it was for his fellow exhibitors to transport materials by rail, which led to his brother Newson Garrett's interest in the railways and subsequently in the construction of the Snape Branch Line in 1859.)
The talk is free to members of East Suffolk U3A.
In general, visitors are welcome but a 'rule of thumb' applied by many is that the first meeting is free and after that you must join — that is the policy of the U3A East Suffolk Branch, and is pretty well the default policy of most. To join the East Suffolk branch costs £12.50 a year — for this members can attend all the monthly talks in Kesgrave, Woodbridge, Felixstowe and Saxmundham, and you also receive a Newsletter and various bulletins.
