Our 2019 Open Day
A highlight of our Open Day at the Leiston Long Shop this year was the launch of our project to digitise the Leiston Grammar School sports team photos for the period 1933 to 1968. The photos have been catalogued and indexed, and the originals have been passed to the Suffolk Record Office who will preserve them for posterity. The digitised photos were on display in the Long Shop’s Exhibition Hall and attracted a steady stream of interested visitors. The photos are available to view at the Group’s Help Centre in the Leiston Council Offices, and will be taken to the Leiston Grammar School Reunion on 22nd June 2019. Copies can be provided to any interested alumni or members of their families – for further information please visit our LGS photos page.
Equally popular in the Exhibition Hall was Peter Drew’s extensive collection of historical newspaper cuttings and postcards featuring the Sizewell, Aldringham and Friston areas.
Across the courtyard in the Garrett Room was a large display of military memorabilia put together by Di and Henry Mann and Chris Broom, who were happy to advise visitors on how to trace their military ancestors.
Help was also on hand to assist folk to research their family trees using computers and the internet — and ever popular Janet Huckle was kept busy as usual dating peoples’ old family photographs.
Our roving photographer's pictures, taken at the Open Day, can be viewed here.
Visitors’ donations raised £100 for Long Shop funds.
