Worlingworth's Gt War
The four years of Centenary commemorations for the Great War have resulted in sustained research into the fallen on our local parish memorials. Surrounding the parish of Worlingworth are eight other parishes — a total of ninety men on those parish war memorials, most of whom we knew nothing about — until now. Geoffrey Robinson and the Worlingworth Local History Group have completed a new book, to be published in November, about the lives of all these men. Amazing stories — poignant circumstances — the able seaman who wed his sweetheart and five weeks later went down with his ship in the Mediterranean — a Brundish farmer’s son saved from a German bullet by his wallet and notebook — the soldier who became a P.O.W. and drew respect from a German farming family.
This new book, “From Furrow to Trench”, will be launched at Worlingworth’s Great War Exhibition, to be held at Worlingworth Community Centre on Saturday November 10th from 10 until 2 pm. Films will be shown and trench maps on display, as well as other memorabilia, and table displays from other groups in the district. Entry is free and there will be liquid refreshments available. It should be an informative event.
